  2.   (venous access device) surgically implanted.
  3.   Ports and catheters are implanted under
  4.   local anesthetic in an operating room,
  5.   although general anesthetic may sometimes
  6.   be used.
  7.       A port is essentially a small chamber
  8.   placed under the skin, usually near the
  9.   shoulder. The chamber connects to a small
  10.   tube inserted in a vein and threaded through
  11.   it into larger veins.  Access to the port is
  12.   easy for the person injecting the drug and
  13.   avoids the pain and discomfort often
  14.   associated with intravenous injections.
